We didn't plan on flying Business Class. Or at least — I didn't.
Fresh off an incredible trip through Italy, running on adrenaline and probably too much wine, we were just trying to get home. But somewhere between the gate and the check-in counter at Milan Malpensa, my partner had other plans. Before I even realized what was happening, we were asking about Business Class upgrades on the Emirates A380.
What can I say — we had something to celebrate. 😏
So we upgraded. Economy to Business Class, on the spot. And frankly, it turned into one of the most memorable flights of my life — not just because of the seat, the food, or the bar lounge at 35,000 feet — but because of what happened two hours before landing.
Here's everything you need to know about Emirates Business Class on the A380.
check-in process
Unlike Premium Economy, Business Class upgrades weren't available through the Emirates app — we checked. So we took a chance at the check-in counter at Milan Malpensa (MXP) and hoped for the best. Fortunately for us, upgrades were available, and the process was seamless. The upgrade cost €800 per person (roughly $937 USD) one way.
One thing to note: upgrading at the counter means you won't get access to the Emirates Business Class lounge. But if lounge access is important to you, book Business Class upfront.
boarding
Business and First Class board together, right after families and young children.
You'll head upstairs — yes, upstairs — on the A380's iconic double-decker staircase.
One practical note: you carry your own carry-on up those stairs, so pack light. A heavy carry-on luggage up a staircase is not the vibe. If you can’t carry it, don’t expect the flight attendants to carry it for you either.
seating
Business Class on the Emirates A380 is configured in a 1 - 2 - 1 layout, meaning every single seat has direct aisle access. No climbing over anyone. No awkward shuffling.
We sat in the middle section, in seats 11E and 11F, and the space was, frankly, shocking. I kept looking around, thinking — this is Business Class?! I’ve sat in China Airlines’ Business Class before, but this felt different. It felt like an entirely different world from what I was used to.
The seat fully reclines into a flat bed, which is incredible for a long haul.
The one thing I'll flag: the leg rest reclines, but there's a smallgap where your legs rest rather than a fully seamless flat surface. There's a cushion that fills it in, so it's not uncomfortable — I just expected it to be completely flat, and it wasn't quite that.
amenities
From the moment you settle in, it's clear this is a different experience.
Welcome drink & snacks
We were offered champagne or juice as a welcome drink — we chose champagne, because honestly, when Emirates offers you champagne at 35,000 feet, you say yes.
There's also a snack cubby right at your seat stocked with water, sparkling water, and snacks whenever you want them — no waiting for a cart, no asking. It's just there.
Stay comfy
The amenity situation is generous. A flight attendant came around before the meal service to ask if we wanted a mattress topper for resting, which was a thoughtful touch. Loungewear and slippers are also available on request — I originally wanted to wear the loungewear, but ended up skipping it because I was too lazy to change into them lol.
Touchscreen tablet
There's also a touch-screen tablet at the table that's supposed to be detachable and usable as a handheld full-screen remote controller — but it wasn't activated on our flight.
I wasn’t able to detach the screen to use it fully cause it was locked the whole flight…
The bar lounge
One of the most iconic features of the Emirates A380 Business Class is the onboard bar lounge — a dedicated social space just for First and Business Class passengers. You can walk to the back, grab a drink, order some snacks, and just... hang out at 35,000 feet. 🥂
We went a couple of times throughout the flight and loved every minute of it. We even got to chat with another couple who turned out to be from New York City, and spent some time talking with the flight attendants too!
It's one of those experiences that makes you feel like flying is actually fun again.
entertainment
Headphones
With over 60,000 movies, shows, games, and music — same as Premium Economy but with a significantly better headphone situation.
Business Class headphones are soft, comfortable, noise canceling, and have a dedicated on/off button. Night and day compared to the PE headphones. These actually made the entertainment worth diving into.
Hidden extras you’ll love
A few things I loved that you might not expect: you can call other seats from your seat (great if you're traveling with someone not sitting next to you), play games with other passengers on board, and even set an alarm if you're planning to sleep and need to wake up before landing.
WiFi
WiFi is available and comes in different tiers. I chose the most basic option — free texting and staying connected. All you need is your name, birthday, seat number, and email to activate it.
in-flight dining
Two menus. A food menu and a dedicated wine list — both printed, both available in English and Arabic.
The wine list includes some seriously fine selections, including a sommelier's choice that they actually bring on board. We tried a couple of different wines, plus the sommelier's pick, and genuinely loved all of them.
The food was incredible. Generous portions, thoughtfully prepared, and you can tell real care went into the menu. One honest note though— skip the seafood. I ordered the shrimp, and it just wasn't as fresh as everything else I had.
Everything else on the menu? Fantastic.
Dessert, sides, coffee, tea — all excellent.
This is the meal service you want on a long-haul flight back from Europe.
bathroom
Business Class has its own dedicated bathrooms upstairs — no sharing with Economy or Premium Economy. Semi-clean, well-stocked, and exactly what you'd expect for this cabin level.
However, I have noticed that they are surprisingly smaller than the bathrooms in Premium Economy. It also feels a bit more outdated than Premium Economy.
service
I'll be honest — service started a bit rocky for me.
A few flight attendants checked my ticket more than once to confirm I was in the right section, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Then, when a flight attendant was setting up my bed and comforter, I was filming the whole process — you know, documenting the experience for the blog — and she thought I was filming her. She asked me not to film other flight attendants without consent — which is completely understandable — but the way she delivered it came off a little rude. I told her I wasn't filming her at all. It just set a slightly awkward tone for the start of the flight…
But then things shifted.
Later in the flight, a different flight attendant came to my side of the cabin. She noticed I was watching the last Harry Potter film, stopped, and said she loves Harry Potter. We got to talking. A little while later, she came back, and we got to talk a bit more. She asked what my partner and I were doing in Italy. I looked at my partner — “Do you want to tell her?” He smiled and said, “We got engaged.” 💍💖
She lit up. Genuinely happy for us.
About two hours before landing, we headed to the bar lounge to soak in the A380 experience one last time before we landed. We had no idea what was coming.
All twelve flight attendants had come together and surprised us — champagne, sweets, and a card filled with congratulations messages written in twelve different languages. One for each flight attendant, each speaking a different language.
I don't like to cry, but I have to tell you I almost did.
That moment made the entire flight unforgettable.
Mixed start, the sweetest ending.

is it worth it?
Emirates Business Class on the A380 is seriously one of the best flying experiences I've had. The space, the food, the wine, the bar lounge, the flat bed — it all delivers at a level that feels genuinely luxurious.
And here's something worth appreciating: Emirates no longer makes new A380s. So every time you fly one, you're on a piece of aviation history. The fact that we got to experience Business Class on this plane felt extra special knowing that.
Could the service have been more consistent from the start? Yes. What happened was completely understandable — I get it — I just wish it had been delivered a little differently. But what the crew did at the end of that flight — the champagne, the sweets, the card in twelve languages — that's the kind of thing my fiance and I will remember forever. ♥️
What surprised me most was the people around us.
The passengers in Business Class were working non-stop — laptops open, flipping through paperwork, grinding at 35,000 feet. Instead of feeling out of place, I found it honestly motivating. A reminder of what we’re working toward. We even ended up chatting with another couple at the bar lounge who happened to live in New York City — small world!
And the flight attendants? All based in Dubai, flying around the world for Emirates. Learning about their lifestyle — the schedule, the cities, the way they've built a life around what they love — was genuinely inspiring.
If you can get an upgrade at the counter or catch a good fare, do it. Especially for long haul.
There's truly nothing like flying the A380 in Business Class.
