American Airlines Main Cabin Review

Flying with American Airlines can definitely have some ups and downs, and after my recent experience, I'm here to share my insights to help you decide if it's the right choice for your next trip. In this review, I'll walk you through my journey riding their Main Cabin and highlight the differences between Main Cabin and Basic Economy at the end. Let's dive in.

Check-in Process

Checking in is pretty straightforward. You can either check in at the airport with their kiosk or at the counter if you’re checking in luggage.

For a seamless boarding experience, I recommend downloading the American Airlines app and checking in 24 hours before your flight. You can easily add your boarding pass to your phone's wallet, making boarding a hassle-free process.

Boarding Experience

Passengers are organized into different boarding groups, with priority given to those needing assistance and higher-tier passengers first.

As a Main Cabin passenger, I boarded in Group 7 — which was the last group to board.

The crew efficiently managed the boarding process, reminding passengers to wait for their group to be called.

TIP: Pay attention to your assigned group number and wait patiently for your board turn.

Bags

American Airlines allows passengers to bring one free carry-on bag (measuring 22x14x9”, or 56x36x23 cm) and one personal item, such as a small handbag. Remember, if you’re traveling with pets, they count as ONE carry-on item.

If you have additional bags or luggage, be prepared to check your bags in with a fee.

Seat Comfort

In the main cabin, seat selection comes at an additional cost, even for preferred seats. While technically not free, I paid for my seat selection.

The seats themselves are basic and functional, offering minimal comfort. However, they are notably small within the 3x3 configuration typical of economy seating.

Amenities

American Airlines offers complimentary in-flight entertainment with a wide selection of movies available in various languages. The touchscreen display features a blackout mode for increased privacy, although the fixed position of the screen can be inconvenient if the passenger in front reclines their seat.

Each seat is equipped with a USB port and an earphone jack, and complementary earplugs are passed out if you need one.

Passengers can purchase Wi-Fi access to connect during the flight. I believe the prices vary depending on the duration, with options available for hourly or full-flight purchases. T-Mobile customers may enjoy complimentary internet access.

TIP: I recommend bringing alcohol wipes to clean the screen — my screen was very dirty and had grease all over.

Food + Beverage

American Airlines provides complimentary snacks and drinks in the Main Cabin, with a selection of light refreshments available. While there are various food options, like the curry wrap they offer, I’d advise you to stay away from that to avoid feeling discomfort during the flight.

PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION: The Fruit & Cheese Plate is perfect to satisfy your cravings during your flight without feeling weird — Like having to go use the toilet right away.

Bathroom

Speaking of toilets.

The airplane bathrooms are surprisingly clean, although they didn’t have toilet seat covers. This may be because the plane was older or other unknown factors.

However, all essential amenities such as hand soap, paper towels, and tissues are available to maintain hygiene during the flight.

In-flight Experience

I was surprised that my experience was nice flying with American Airlines Main Cabin. Unlike previous experiences with other American flights, American Airline’s flight attendants were engaging and provided excellent service throughout the flight. Their positive energy contributed to the overall ambiance, making the journey enjoyable. It was refreshing to encounter such attentive and friendly staff, which frankly enhanced the overall flight experience.

Main Cabin vs Basic Economy

First and foremost, Main Cabin is still economy. Regardless of the “fancier” name it gives. Main Cabin offers more flexibility and amenities than Basic Economy.

With Basic Economy, they’re designed for budget-conscious travelers. Even though your flight tickets may be a lot cheaper, you have more restrictions such as limited baggage, the inability to make changes to your flight once you’ve booked your ticket, no seat selection unless you pay more, etc.

Figure out your needs and preferences to make the best choice for your travel experience.
