Frontier Airlines Review: budget-friendly with trade offs

I recently flew on Frontier Airlines and needed something affordable to book my airplane ticket to Dallas. I booked it 10 days before the date and I wanted to share my experience of how it felt flying on Frontier with no expectations whatsoever.

booking & pricing

Frontier Airlines operates with a mission to make air travel accessible to all, emphasizing affordability. They present travelers with distinct package selections known as The WORKS and The PERKS, with versatile features — very beneficial for frequent flyers that loves cheap flights.

Frontier's reputation as a budget-conscious choice holds true, especially when traveling light. When you travel with just one small personal item instead of having a carry-on or checked in luggage, you can SAVE money.

If you do end up having a carry-on, make sure to add that in your cart because they DO check to make sure you’ve purchased a carry-on or checked baggage on your ticket.

the amenities

The amenities on Frontier Airlines are indeed as basic as everyone has mentioned. You won't find WiFi, TV, or other entertainment options during your flight. If you choose to fly with Frontier, bring a book, download shows or movies on your phone, or engage in light and enjoyable activities to keep yourself entertained throughout your flight.

This simplicity aligns with Frontier's commitment to environmental sustainability, reflected in their decision to reduce the weight of onboard services like WiFi and television screens.

baggage policies

Navigating Frontier's baggage regulations involves a simple structure: travelers are entitled to ONE free personal item. However, additional charges apply for both carry-on and checked baggage.

Purchasing Frontier's carry-on or checked baggage services online presents an opportunity for cost savings.

When I was observing the boarding process, it became evident that adherence to these policies is essential. Those who have purchased carry-on luggage are granted access to overhead bins, while others are required to stow their belongings under the seat in front of them.

seat selection & legroom

Frontier Airlines is committed to the Lean and Green concept. In 2021, they introduced Recaro seats that are not only lighter and more comfortable but also contribute to a 30% reduction in weight, aligning with their environmental goals.

When it comes to seat selection, there are two options: standard (28 - 31") and stretch seating (36”-38”), both available for an additional fee. Frontier emphasizes that their seats offer modern comfort, pre-reclining, extra cushioning, increased personal space, and an eco-friendly design.

I chose not to pay extra for seat selection, allowing Frontier to assign me a seat. On my trip to DFW, I found myself in seat 25B, categorized as standard seating.

However, the reality of standard seating hit me hard. The seats were extremely cramped, with limited legroom and a short gap between my legs and the tray table. Despite Frontier's claims of “cushioned comfort”, my experience did not reflect this.

I’m 5'6, the seating arrangement proved uncomfortable, especially as I was sandwiched between two tall passengers. This discomfort persisted throughout the four-hour flight, highlighting the limitations of the standard seating option.

in-flight experience

I was the first that arrived at my seat and my initial observation was far from positive. The cleanliness of this airline was terrible — seatbelt was disheveled and crumbs scattered across the floor. This lack of tidiness contradicted Frontier’s claims of thorough aircraft cleaning prior to new passengers boarding.

During the boarding process and as passengers were settling into their seats, a Frontier Airlines staff member entered the plane with an unpleasant demeanor, raising her voice to inform passengers that overhead bins were reserved exclusively for those who had paid for carry-on luggage, not for personal items.

Surprisingly, our departure from LGA was on time. That was one good thing.

My personal experience during the 4 hour flight was okay. The flight was packed. The confined space also made it hard for personal space or privacy. I just kept telling myself, it’s a 4 hour flight, it’ll be over soon.

food & beverage?

You're probably familiar with the saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Frontier Airlines sticks to this principle by offering drinks and snacks for purchase during flights. While the airline does offer meals if pre-booked online, it's essential to note that every amenity, including water, comes with a price tag.

TIP: bring your own reusable water bottle! I completely forgot mine at home and had to buy one at the airport for a hefty price.

punctuality

One remarkable aspect I must highlight about flying with Frontier was their punctuality. Our departure was on schedule, and remarkably, we even landed a few minutes ahead of the expected arrival time. This punctuality was genuinely appreciated, particularly when spending several hours in a packed airplane. It's a relief to get up and move on to the next destination.

know before you fly

Travel Light: Frontier's focus on reducing weight may lead to additional charges for extra baggage. If you're carrying a lot, considering an alternative airline might be better.

Be Punctual: Timeliness is crucial. Arrive an hour before departure to check in luggage. Check-in counters close an hour prior to takeoff. Boarding commences 30 minutes before departure, with doors closing 15 minutes prior.

Online Check-In: Opt for online or smartphone check-in for a seamless process. Add your boarding pass to your phone for efficient boarding.

Hydration: Carry your own water bottle to stay hydrated, saving on in-flight purchases.

Free Kids' Travel: Children under 13 can fly for free, a family-friendly perk.

Traveling with Pets: Pets can accompany you, fitting in a travel carrier at your leg space. Be aware that this counts as your free personal item, potentially incurring carry-on fees!

Overall

I applaud Frontier's commitment to environmental sustainability by prioritizing green initiatives and offering affordable flying options. However, it's essential to acknowledge the limitations as well.

If you want extensive entertainment, cleanliness, and top-notch customer service, Frontier might not meet your expectations in these areas. The experience can feel similar to a crowded bus ride, providing a budget-friendly means to reach your destination. While I don’t recommend Frontier for flights exceeding 4 hours due to cramped space, it becomes a budget-friendly option for trips under 3 hours when you're traveling with just a personal item.
