Sun Moon Lake has become one of the top destinations for travelers visiting Taiwan for the first time. Additionally, locals often visit the area to relax, enjoy delicious street food, and take in the beauty of nature.
Sun Moon Lake is more than just a lake; it's a magical escape in Taiwan. Picture crystal-clear waters, lush green mountains, bustling markets, and a rich cultural heritage.
I’ve decided to create a bucket list of the best activities to do at Sun Moon Lake, including top accommodations for an amazing experience and delicious local cuisine.
for adventures
Ride the boat
Hop on a boat and see the beauty of Sun Moon Lake from a new perspective.
Check out different spots like Yidashao Wharf (伊達邵碼頭), Xuangguang Wharf (玄光碼頭), and Zhaowu Wharf, and take some great pictures at Shuishe (水社碼頭) and Chiang Kai-shek Piers (蔣介石碼頭).
Hit the trails
Lace up your boots (or sneakers) and explore the scenic paths surrounding Sun Moon Lake — from lush forests to the serene lakeside views, every step is literally a postcard moment.
You can also rent a bike and ride the full loop around the lake!
Just note — a few sections have stairs, so you might have to lift your bike briefly. But trust me, the views make it so worth it. 🌿🚲
Don’t forget to hit the iconic Nine Frogs Stack (this picture over here), and take a photo!

Nine Frogs Stack Trail (水蛙頭步道)
Don’t forget to check out the Nine Frogs Stack along the way!Neihu Mountain Trail (內湖山步道)
Rent bicycles
One of the most memorable things I did at Sun Moon Lake was renting a bike and biking around the lake.
There are regular and electric bikes available!
Sun Moon Lake cable car
Experience Sun Moon Lake from a breathtaking new perspective with a ride on the Sun Moon Lake cable car. Go up the mountains and enjoy panoramic views of the shimmering lake, lush mountains, and the town below. While there are limited activities to do at the top, the journey up is a fun adventure.
for culture
Visit temples
Discover Taiwan's spiritual side at Wenwu (文武廟), XuanZang (玄奘寺), and Xuanguang (玄光寺) Temples. Discover local traditions, take in the stunning views, and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere.
拉魯島Lalu Island
Uncover the mysteries of Lalu Island, a sacred site for the Thao people located in the middle of the lake. Although visitors can't step foot on the island, you can still admire its beauty from afar in a boat ride.
慈恩塔 Ci'en Pagoda
Walk up the 400 steps to Ci'en Pagoda for breathtaking views, but keep in mind that it closes early — so plan ahead!
for foodies
Street food
Head over to Ita Thao Shopping District (伊達邵商店街) and make sure to treat your belly to some incredible food from some of the most unique street vendors.
They've got everything from tasty pork over rice to refreshing cold cucumber.
Don't forget to try the famous mushroom and tea eggs!
Sun Moon Lake Assam Tea
Sun Moon Lake is famous for its unique Assam black tea. Be sure to visit local tea shops to sample this unique brew and perhaps purchase some leaves to take home.
