If you love being outdoors without the crowds, Chiayi County is seriously underrated.
Most people know this area for its high-mountain tea and Alishan, but what surprised me the most was how many amazing hiking trails there were — quiet, fresh air, and views that make the climb 100% worth it.
In this guide, I’m sharing two of my favorite hiking trails in Chiayi County: the Mist Trail (霧之道) and the Trail of Tea (茶之道). The Mist Trail is all about chasing that magical sea of clouds over rolling tea fields, while the Trail of Tea gives you elevated views right on top of the plantations. I’ll also share some other hiking trails you shouldn’t miss, so you won’t get fomo.
I’ll walk you through what to expect, how hard each hike actually is, when to go, and a few things I wish I had known before lacing up my hiking shoes — so you can explore Chiayi’s trails with confidence (and fewer slips than me 🥲).

Mist Trail 霧之道
⚲ 604, Taiwan, Chiayi County, Zhuqi Township, 16
The Mist Trail gets its name from the magical sea of clouds that often rolls over the surrounding tea plantations.
Depending on the weather and season, you’ll hike through tea fields, cedar trees, and bamboo forests before reaching panoramic viewpoints above the clouds.
🥾 Hiking Experience
This trail is no joke — your legs (and glutes) will feel it. The incline is steep almost the entire way, so pace yourself and stop often to catch your breath and take in the views.
At the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of tea plantations, and if the conditions are right, a dreamy blanket of clouds drifting below. The bamboo forest section is especially atmospheric but can be slippery due to mist and fallen leaves.
⚠️ PRO TIP
Wear sturdy shoes with a good grip. I wore regular running shoes and learned very quickly why that was a mistake 😅

Trail of Tea 茶之道
⚲ 605, Taiwan, Chiayi County, Alishan Township, 樂野村
The Trail of Tea is a beautiful way to experience Chiayi’s tea culture up close — walking through tea plantations, bamboo groves, and lush greenery while soaking in mountain views and fresh air.
🥾 Hiking Experience
Although we didn’t have enough time to complete the full Trail of Tea (we had dinner reservations waiting for us 😭), even hiking part of it gave me a solid taste of how stunning this trail is.
The stairs can be surprisingly steep in sections — enough to get your heart pumping — but the elevated views over the tea fields make every step worth it.
Just like the Mist Trail, good grip shoes are a must, especially after the rain or morning mist.
