If you’re wondering what it feels like to stay in a cozy, family-owned guesthouse tucked away in Chiayi’s tea plantations — let me paint the picture for you.
After a long day exploring Alishan and sipping tea at a local teahouse, we squeezed in a few last-minute hikes… and after sunset, we somehow ended up completely unsure how to get to our stay at Astrea B&B. My partner and I called to let them know we might check in much later while we tried to figure out transportation — and without hesitation, they came out to pick us up when we realized we were stranded.
That kind of kindness sticks with you. It’s the type of travel moment that doesn’t fade, no matter how many trips you take.
If you’re looking for a place that feels like hitting the reset button — quiet, cozy, and surrounded by nature — this is it. Here’s why Astrea remains one of my favorite stays of all time.
about Astrea
Astrea is tucked away off the main road, hidden along a small hill path that winds uphill through tea plantations. As you make your way up, the B&B slowly comes into view — quiet, scenic, and completely removed from the noise of daily life.
More than just a place to sleep, Astrea is a family-run guesthouse deeply rooted in tea and mushroom farming.
The young couple’s family has worked this land for generations, and opening the B&B allowed them to stay close to home while sharing their mountain views and traditions with travelers.
What stood out most was how personal everything felt. You’re not treated like a guest checking in — you’re treated like someone welcomed into their home.
From personal tea tastings with the owner’s father to casual conversations about life in the mountains, staying here felt genuinely special and really hits me in the feels.
checking in
From the moment we arrived, the hospitality at Astrea felt effortless and sincere.
Checking in felt less like a transaction and more like catching up with friends.
The owners took time to share local tips — where to go, when to catch the stunning sunrise, and how to plan our days around the current weather. They even offered rides whenever we needed them, which made getting around the area incredibly stress-free.
Any question we had — about Alishan, the B&B, or local life — was answered with enthusiasm and personal stories. It’s rare to feel that kind of connection while traveling, and it’s what truly sets Astrea apart.
Venus room overview
The room was cozy, spotless, and thoughtfully set up.
Toiletries were provided (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, even a mini loofah), along with towels, a blow dryer, an electric kettle, coffee, and Astrea’s own tea bags — a small but meaningful touch for tea lovers 🍵
But the real highlight? The bed.
After a full day of hiking Alishan and the other trails, sinking into those soft blankets felt unreal.
Between the comfort, quiet surroundings, and attention to detail, this was hands down one of the most comfortable stays we’ve had in Taiwan.

chasing the sunrise
During our check-in, the owners mentioned that 5:30 AM was the perfect time for a beautiful sunrise.
I was so excited to see the sunrise that I woke up at 4:50 AM without an alarm. 😅
My partner and I headed out around 5:20 AM with our drone, following their recommendation to the nearby viewpoints. Even though the clouds covered the sun that morning, the experience was still magical — mist rolling over the hills, soft light creeping in, and total silence around us.
Astrea’s location makes sunrise incredibly accessible, and it’s one of those moments I’ll always stick with this stay forever.
dining experience
Traditional breakfast
Astrea doesn’t cook breakfast on-site; instead, they do something much more local.
When you check in, you’ll receive a Chinese-only menu from a nearby Taiwanese breakfast shop. Choose what you’d like, fill out the order form, and leave it at the front desk. The owners pick everything up fresh the next morning.
💡TIP: Download Google Translate if you don’t read Chinese — it helps a lot.
You can enjoy breakfast either in your room or in the outdoor dining area. We chose to eat outside, which made the whole experience feel extra authentic and relaxed.
Morning tea ceremony
After breakfast, the owner’s father hosts a traditional tea ceremony (if you’d like to join, which I highly recommend doing so).
This isn’t just any tea — it’s oolong grown directly from their family’s tea plantation. Watching him carefully prepare the leaves and brew each cup felt intimate and grounding.
As we sipped, he shared stories about the tea-making process, the land, and the traditions passed down through generations.
