We spent my birthday getaway on a hilltop in Culebra, lying in a hammock with nothing to look at but the Caribbean. That's Aleli Cottages in a sentence. It isn't a resort: no pool, no restaurant, no front desk. What you get is a cottage tucked into the greenery, panoramic ocean views, sunsets from your own terrace, and a wild peacock who showed up around 8:30 every morning to say hello (I named him Dodo).
Frankly, that's what made it feel like a real escape from New York. It's quiet, a little rustic, and built from natural materials that blend into the hillside. Here's what the Pitirre cottage is like, what to know about the road up, and who this stay is (and isn't) for.
About Aleli Cottages
Aleli Cottages sits on a hilltop, away from the crowded touristy spots, with panoramic views of the Caribbean. The cottages are built with natural materials, so they blend into the hillside instead of competing with it, and that eco-minded approach is a big part of the appeal.
It's best for couples and friend groups who'd rather wake up to chickens than a basic alarm clock. Skip booking this if you need a pool, a restaurant, or reliable Wi-Fi.
Getting There
Hammocks availble for you to lay!
You can't walk to Aleli, so plan to rent a vehicle. Some guests take golf carts, but the hills are steep and rugged… I suggest renting a Jeep so you’d have better grip and its more comfortable anyways. We rented from Carlos Jeep Rental, which also got us to Playa Resaca.
Take your time on the drive up, watch for potholes, and park for free right in front of your cottage.
Pitirres Room Overview
We stayed in Pitirres, the first cottage ever built at Aleli.
It sleeps two and has a queen bed, air conditioning and fans, a full kitchen with supplies, and a private bathroom. The roofless outdoor shower is the only one of its kind on the property, and towels, toiletries, and beach chairs are all provided.
It's tucked downhill on the left side of the property, so it took us a minute to find, but the privacy was worth it. My favorite spot was the terrace, where the hammock, the outdoor seating, and the sunsets and sunrises did most of the work.
Mornings started with Dodo the peacock around 8:30 AM, and the wild roosters and roosters served as our natural alarm clock. 🐓🐓🐓🐥
One note: the window screens have small holes, so we got a few mosquitoes. Bring spray and use it.
Amenities
The stunning sunset right at our terrace 🥹
Wi-Fi
It's available but unreliable. I could only connect when standing in the kitchen, so I used my hotspot. An Airalo eSIM is an easy fix.
Kitchen
There's a communal kitchen, which we skipped in favor of eating out. Your cottage also has its own full kitchen.
Parking
Free and on-site, right in front of the cottage.
