【花蓮 梯田山民宿】Deep Breath B&B in Hualien

Deep Breath B&B cottage at dusk with warm lights and communal kitchen in the mountains of Hualien

If it’s your first time visiting Hualien, you’ve probably heard about Taroko Gorge and maybe even considered staying near it. We almost did too — until we realized road conditions after the earthquake made that plan a little… unrealistic.

So we pivoted.

And that’s how we found Deep Breath B&B — also known online as Terrace Resort (yes, the name can be a bit confusing — more on that below).

Hidden high in the mountains of Shoufeng Township, this European-style cottage stay feels like you’re sleeping under starlight with nothing but frogs, birds, and the occasional monkey sightings keeping you company.

If you’re looking for a secluded, nature-immersed mountain escape — this is it.

about Deep Breath B&B

Deep Breath B&B cottage exterior in Hualien with manager Lao’s dog Xuebao walking outside

Deep Breath B&B is owned by a couple who believe in coexisting with nature — not controlling it. Their hotel manager, Lao, runs the property daily, and you’ll likely meet his adopted dog, Xuebao, wandering around asking for scratches.

This isn’t a polished city hotel. It’s intentionally rustic, peaceful, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

At night you’ll hear frogs croaking.

In the morning, birds chirping.

If you’re lucky, you’ll maybe even spot monkeys in the trees.

They don’t use pesticides. They don’t disturb wildlife. So if bugs or spider webs make you uncomfortable — this probably isn’t your stay. But if you love raw, untouched nature? You’ll understand the magic of this stay right away.

booking tips

Okay… let’s talk about the name confusion first.

The official website URL says Terrace Resort, the Chinese name translates to Terrace Resort, but on booking platforms, it’s listed as Deep Breath B&B.

Yes. It threw me off, too.

You can book directly through their website. They offer English, Japanese, and Chinese translations, and even currency conversions — which is great.

But here’s where it gets tricky.

We booked the Ruby Room based on the photos on their official website… and after confirming with the B&B, we realized the room category on the booking page with the same photos didn’t exactly match what we thought we selected. The images during booking can be a little misleading.

So here’s my advice:

If you’re booking directly → message them to confirm your exact room.
If you’re visual like me → match the photos carefully.

Later, I realized they’re also listed on:

The room names are different from the official website, but the photos are clearer, and you know which one you’re actually booking. Focus on the images, not just the room title.

After you book, they’ll email you asking for your LINE contact. Add them.

Lao (the hotel manager) will message you — usually in Chinese — with:

  • Arrival coordination

  • Road tips

  • Sunset timing advice

  • Whether you should grab dinner beforehand

When we visited in January, sunset was early and he strongly recommended arriving before dark… which we later understood why.

getting there

Mountain cottage exterior at Deep Breath B&B in Hualien surrounded by trees and shrubs

If convenience is your top priority… this might not be the stay for you.
Deep Breath B&B sits high up in the mountains of Hualien — and getting there is part of the experience.

You’ll absolutely need a rental car. There’s no easy public transportation option.

Before arrival, Lao messaged us on LINE asking what time we planned to arrive. The mountain road is extremely narrow — in some sections, it basically feels like one lane — so he coordinates with other guests to avoid cars meeting head-on.

Originally, we planned to grab dinner before heading up.

But sunset came faster than expected… we pivoted. We stopped at 7-Eleven, grabbed instant noodles, snacks, and drinks, and decided to cook in the communal kitchen instead.

Driving up the mountain as the sun was setting? Slightly terrifying.

No street lights. Just sharp curves.
Twists and turns that make you grip the steering wheel tighter than you’d like to admit.

If a local car comes up behind you, pull over when it's safe to do so and let them pass. They know these roads better than you do. Also, don’t be afraid to drive slowly! You’re not rushing anywhere.

Once it got dark, we fully understood why Lao suggested arriving before sunset.

But honestly? When we finally arrived and stepped out of the car into complete mountain silence — it felt so worth it to be there.

And random surprise: there’s a Tesla charger on-site! So EV drivers, you’re covered.

arrival experience

When we arrived, Lao was waiting for us in the front area of the parking lot, holding several umbrellas as it started to sprinkle. He welcomed us warmly and informed us that payment had to be made in cash. Luckily, we had enough cash on hand, because we didn’t know!

After bringing in our luggage, Lao showed us to our rooms and explained where everything was located, including the communal kitchen, a communal living room area for reading or relaxing, and an outdoor fireplace.

Lao then asked what time we would like to wake up for breakfast; we could choose either 8:30 or 9:30 a.m. (breakfast is not included in the stay, so it requires an additional payment).

We chose to wake up early and have breakfast at 8:30 a.m., and he said he would see us the next morning, along with his dog, Xuebao!

room overview

Since we were traveling with my brother, we booked two separate rooms.

We stayed in the Ruby Room, which is referred to as the Deluxe Double Room on the booking website, while my brother stayed in the Crystal Room, listed as the Standard Double Room.

Ruby Room (Deluxe Double)

This one includes the outdoor bathtub — which is my fave highlight.

Huge bathroom, a separate indoor standing shower, and an upstairs bed that honestly felt king-sized despite being listed as queen.

No TV.
Just nature.
And silence.

Crystal Room (Standard Double)

No outdoor tub, but it includes a writing desk — perfect for journaling or creative work.

Morning tea here hits different. There’s an upstairs tea area with locally sourced tea leaves. The brewing instructions are in Chinese, so use a translator app if needed.

dining experience

We have enjoyed both the Communal Kitchen & Breakfast during our short stay at Deep Breath B&B!

Communal kitchen

Since we were coming from Taipei, our original plan was to pick up dinner and bring it to Deep Breath B&B. However, the sun was setting a lot faster than we had anticipated, and finding directions to the B&B turned out to be more complicated than we thought.

So, we decided to stop by a 7-Eleven before heading up the mountains to grab some instant noodles, drinks, snacks, and dessert for later that evening.

After dropping off our bags and taking a short tour with Lao, we prepared our instant noodles in the communal kitchen. As we cooked, it started to pour outside, and the darkness surrounded the area, making it quite cozy to listen to the rain pattering against the windows while we enjoyed our ramen.

Breakfast at communal living room

The next morning, we woke up and went to the communal living room, where we were greeted by Lao’s dog, Xuebao! What a great morning to wake up to!

Since we told Lao the day before, when we arrived, that we would love to have breakfast at 8:30, our breakfast was actually ready before 8:30, which was amazing. Lao was the only person preparing everyone’s breakfast, and everything was homemade, making the experience even more special.

There was coffee, tea, and water on the table for us to grab.

amenities

There are so many amenities that Deep Breath B&B has, and here are a few of my favorites:

DIY bath fragrance

You can create your own bath fragrance blend. The instructions are in Chinese for the measurements (again, the translator app helps), but it’s such a thoughtful experience.

Views

The views are incredible!!!

Terraced hills. Misty mornings. Wildlife in the distance. I even saw a monkey in the trees while I was preparing to fly my drone!

Hand-drawn map

In the communal living room, there’s a hand-drawn style map that you can take, showing the nearby attractions of Hualien.

final thoughts

Deep Breath B&B exterior with communal living room, wooden sculpture, and outdoor fireplace

I often find myself saying this after every stay, but I genuinely mean it every time:
there’s just never enough time, and I wish we could’ve stayed longer.
This time was no different.
I really wish we had at least two days and two nights instead of rushing to our next destination.

Our stay at Deep Breath B&B was incredible.

It felt like being one with nature, and I made great memories during our short visit. My favorite experience was flying my drone, even though I ended up crashing it because we were so high up — what an experience lol! But I ended up being able to get my drone back (thanks Lao!), and fix the wings, so we’re all good here.

Meeting Lao and his dog, Xuebao, was another highlight. I loved hearing the story of how he adopted Xuebao, who was a stray pup.

This stay is perfect for those who love nature and need to escape the hectic city life.

Just a heads-up: there will be bugs and spider webs in the area, as they choose not to use bug spray to avoid disturbing nature. If you’re not comfortable with that, this stay might not be for you. But if you’re looking for a getaway and enjoy being surrounded by nature, then this is the perfect place.
