【台北 象山】Elephant Mountain in Taipei
If you want one of the best views of the city of Taipei without having to go up a skyscraper, you can do a semi-short hike up Elephant Mountain (象山). In this quick guide, I’ll cover what the hike is really like, how to get there, and a few tips along the way so you’re not underprepared (or miserable halfway up the stairs).
about Elephant Mountain
Elephant Mountain (象山) is part of the Four Beasts Scenic Area in Taipei and is famous for its direct, postcard‑worthy views of the city and Taipei 101.
The hike itself is short but steep, with a lot of stairs — so don’t underestimate it just because it’s a popular spot to visit. Even with the workout, it’s still considered one of the top travel experiences in Taipei and is often recommended by locals, especially for first‑time visitors.
Located in the Xinyi District, Elephant Mountain is actually super close to the iconic Taipei 101, making it incredibly easy to pair with sightseeing, shopping, or dining in the area.
The mountain gets its name from its shape: when viewed from above at Taipei 101 or any skyscraper, it resembles an elephant’s head and trunk. Elephant Mountain is one of four peaks in the Four Beasts Scenic Area, alongside Lion Mountain, Leopard Mountain, and Tiger Mountain — together believed to protect this part of Taipei.

Taxi / Uber
You can request an Uber or flag down a yellow taxi that’s empty nearby — this is also super convenient after a sunset or night hike when your legs are done.

final thoughts
We didn’t make it all the way to the top this time. Although we planned to go early, we ended up going after breakfast and a café stop. By then, it was getting hot (even in winter). The skies were clear thanks to some rain earlier in the week, but with the heat, mosquitoes, crowds, and not wearing the right clothes, it just wasn’t the best experience…
Yes — it’s touristy, but it’s still 100% worth it.
The stairs are steep and narrow, which can get tiring fast if you take them one step at a time. I recommend skipping steps on the way up if you can and taking breaks as needed.
I’d absolutely revisit Elephant Mountain, but next time I’d go early in the morning to beat the crowds and get a solid drone shot!
