【台中 一中街夜市】Yizhong Street Night Market in Taichung

Most Taichung night market guides will tell you to go to Fengchia for the food. And frankly, they're right. But if you came to Taiwan to shop — like, actually shop — Yizhong Street Night Market is the one you want.

Located in the North District near schools and universities, Yizhong is Taichung's young and bright market — less greasy noodles and grilled skewers, more streetwear racks, jewelry stalls, photobooths, and arcade-style game machines that have you walking out with a plushie you didn't know you needed. (Speaking from experience.)

My partner and I went back in October with friends from Bristol, and honestly, we barely ate — we did have some snacks, hit up a few clothing shops, played some retro Taiwanese games, and called it a night. When I revisited again in January with my partner and my brother, all we did was do the same thing but with streetwear clothing brands, grab boba, and then go to the next stop.

If that sounds like your kind of evening, you're in the right place.

Heads-up: it gets packed on weekends and holidays — student crowd energy. Below: how to get there, what to actually do, and where to head instead if you came for the food.

getting there

Yizhong Street Night Market Hustle: A lively scene with crowds exploring stalls, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of this iconic night market

The crowd on a weekend (:

Getting to Yizhong Street Night Market is part of the adventure.

Here are some different transportation options for you to choose from:

Taxi / Uber

It's a convenient, stress-free option that will drop you off near the entrance to Yizhong Street Night Market. From your drop-off location, you can just start walking to the night market and start exploring!

Walk

If you feel like taking a casual walk and experiencing the local vibes, it is a great option. You'll get to see the energetic surroundings as you head towards the night market.

Bus

Thinking about public transportation? Buses are an affordable option. Look for local routes to Yizhong Night Market.

Drive

Finding parking near Yizhong Street Night Market can be challenging but not impossible for those who choose to drive. It might be a bit tricky to find a spot right next to the market, but if you come across a small parking garage nearby, that's a great option.

things to do

There are many fun activities at Yizhong Street Night Market! Some of my personal favorites were:

萊澤金虎制茶 Lái Zé Jīn Hǔ bubble tea cup at Yizhong Street Night Market Taichung

Grab the tea everyone’s been raving about

While we were exploring and chatting with some locals, they all kept raving about this one boba place — 萊澤金虎制茶 (Lái Zé Jīn Hǔ Zhì Chá).

Seriously, everyone pointed us right to it! When the locals are unanimous about a boba spot, you know it’s a must-try.

Streetwear shopping

Yizhong is a jackpot for streetwear lovers — and NEXTMOBRIOT is the one that really stuck with us.

My partner spotted it first and walked out with some outerwear, my brother grabbed a few pieces too (that's him in the photo), and somehow I ended up leaving with jewelry I didn't plan to buy — all designed by local Taiwanese artists, and so unique I still wear them constantly. The whole shop has that minimalist, slightly edgy aesthetic you'd find at a Tokyo concept store, and frankly, it's the kind of place where everyone in your group finds something.

Honestly, there are so many hidden streetwear shops tucked into Yizhong — no wonder the college students who shop here are so fashionable. If you're into Asian streetwear brands you can't easily find back home, leave room in your suitcase.

Yizhong Street Night Market Fun: Strike a pose in the photobooth with me and friends, capturing the joy and laughter at this vibrant night market

Photobooth

Go into photo booth shops scattered throughout the night market.

Grab some funky outfits and/or accessories you’d like to wear and head into the booths!

You pay inside the photo booth by inserting cash. Once you’re ready, pick a filter you like, hit the button, and get ready for the countdown in 3, 2, 1 SNAP!

Yizhong Street Night Market Retro Fun: Experience the nostalgia with the pinball marble machine - 小時候打彈珠 - a delightful throwback at Yizhong Night Market.

Playing Marbles As A Child
小時候打彈珠

Take a trip down memory lane and play "Playing Marbles As A Child" traditional Taiwanese game.

Don't worry if you’re not sure how to play, the staffs are extremely nice and will help you understand the rules.

Buy your marbles, pick a machine, and start playing! It's not about winning prizes — it's about making memories and having a great time with friends!

Yizhong Street Night Market Cute Finds: Unveil the adorable world with a kawaii cat from the gacha machine at Yizhong Night Market

Win plushies!

If you enjoy playing games, there are many machines with claws and other games where you can win stuffed animals.

Gabriel won this cute little kitty for me, but instead of using a claw machine, he used this round machine. By pressing a button in the right place and time, the stuffed animal comes down like a gacha machine (扭蛋機), and a random prize comes out!
