Liuhe Night Market has been one of Kaohsiung's go-to spots since it opened in 1986 on Liuhe 2nd Road in Xinxing District. It's one of the most well-known night markets in southern Taiwan, especially famous for its fresh seafood — and it's the kind of place that feels equally comfortable whether you're a first-time visitor or someone returning for the tenth time chasing a specific papaya milk stand.
What makes Liuhe stand out isn't just the food. It's the mix of everything in one go — traditional games, local snacks, cold drinks, and the kind of lively street energy that makes you forget what time it is.
Going as a kid and returning as an adult are genuinely two different experiences. This time around, I finally got to appreciate this night market the way it deserves.

🥤 Papaya milk 木瓜牛乳
This is non-negotiable if you're visiting Kaohsiung.
Papaya milk is iconic here, and Liuhe has stands that make it fresh to order.
Creamy, sweet, and nothing like the bottled versions you'll find at 7-Eleven in Taiwan. If you grew up drinking this or have been curious about why people rave about this drink — this is the version you need to get.
🍗 Crispy popcorn chicken 香酥雞
A night market classic done right. Fresh, juicy, and flavorful. The kind of crispy chicken that actually lives up to the hype.
🌱 Plant-based fried chicken 植感雞
This one genuinely surprised me.
Made from mushrooms, it's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside — not Beyond Meat-style, but legit flavorful. You can pick your own toppings for your "fried chicken," which is half the fun. It takes a few minutes to fry and prep, but the wait is worth it.
🦞 Fresh fried seafood 香酥蟹
This stall does different types of fresh fried seafood depending on the day.
We got the fried shrimp and split half a lobster topped with melted cheese. Yes, cheese on lobster. Yes, it was incredible. Go here first before they sell out.
🍺 7-Eleven tap beer
Okay, this one is a hidden gem, and I’m not even sure how my fiancé found this spot out.
There's a 7-Eleven inside Liuhe Night Market that serves tap beer — yes, actual tap beer. The space is small with only a few bar chairs along the right side near the entrance. Perfect for a quick cold beer pit stop mid-market. Only in Taiwan. 🤷🏻♀️
Games & activities
Don't just leave after eating! You need to play some games!
There's a traditional game area where you can win prizes, which we did — though it took a while and a lot more attempts than we'd like to admit. 😅
Two games worth trying are Dinosaur Marble (恐龍彈珠) and Playing Marbles as a Child (小時候玩彈珠), a classic marble game you'll also spot in night markets in Taichung and across Taiwan.
Quick tip for 恐龍彈珠: put in more marbles and aim for the right spot — the tickets come out on the side, and the more marbles you hit it with, the more tickets come out. I still don't fully understand the mechanics, but that much I know for sure.
