Taichung is the second-largest city in Taiwan and is situated in the center of the country. The city's name itself, with "Chung 中" meaning center and "Tai 台" representing Taiwan, perfectly captures its central location.
I visited Taichung three times to see my parents, and each time I went back, I fell more in love with its unique blend of nature and trendy urban vibes. It offers the best of both worlds — from exploring scenic landscapes to experiencing the buzz of the busy city filled with museums, night markets, and charming cafes.

Best Time to Visit
Best weather: November to April
It’s drier and more comfortable, with the sweet spots in October to November and March to April, when it’s warm but not unbearably hot. Winter (December to February) is cooler, with highs in the low 70s and almost no rain.
Summer: June to October
Hot and humid, with highs around 90°F and sudden afternoon downpours. Plan outdoor stops for the morning, then duck into an air-conditioned cafe or museum by midday. Head back out after the sun sets.
Plum rain and typhoons.
Plum rain hits May to June, and typhoon season runs roughly July to October. Taichung is shielded by mountains and is rarely hit severely, but storms can still disrupt flights and trains island-wide, so check the forecast.
Getting There & Around
High Speed Rail
The fastest way in. Hop on the HSR from Taipei (TPE) and you're in Taichung in about an hour. The station sits out in Wuri, so you'll connect by TRA, MRT, or taxi into the city.

Full disclosure: we've been here every single trip — which should tell you everything.
CREAMY DAILY is one of those cafés that earns a return visit not because it's the flashiest spot in Taichung, but because it's genuinely good. The coffee (and tea!) is solid, the desserts are worth ordering (and not too sweet!), and the vibe is the kind of quiet you actually want mid-explore.
It started when I first brought my partner to Taichung. We stumbled in, loved it, and now it's just... part of the routine whenever we're back visiting my parents.
Some people have a home-based restaurant. This is ours. 🫶🏼
JACU CAFE

Best bagel I've ever had in Taiwan — and my partner and I are both from New York, so that's not a sentence I throw around lightly.
JACU is one of those local breakfast gems that the Google reviews won't stop hyping, and for once, the hype is right.
The space is warm, green, and intimate — you step in and immediately feel like you belong. The owner roasts his own beans on-site and makes every waffle by hand (no premade mix), and he's so hands-on he sometimes delivers orders to customers' homes himself — if he's out, his mom holds down the fort until he's back.
The food is the whole point. The Butter and Sugar Bagel is deceptively simple — just butter and sugar, crispy outside, pillowy inside, frankly an explosion of flavor. The Honey Waffle is lightly sweet, fluffy within, and crisp at the edges. And the tea's crazy (in a good way): I tried the Matcha and the High Mountain Tea, both incredible.
Worth the wait, worth the trip. ☕
Wheat Allergy Baking Studio 小麥過敏烘焙工作室

Hidden down an alley behind HAUSINC 1035 (look for the "1035" logo), this bakery is run by Leo, who developed a wheat allergy but refused to give up baking — so he built a bakery entirely around it.
Everything's vegan, dairy- and egg-free, and frankly you'd never guess it's allergy-friendly by taste alone. Popular items sell out fast, so go earlier in the day. Bonus: bring your own bag for a 10 TWD discount. Cash only!
Liu Shao Qing 柳梢青

A stylish spot for modern Chinese food, tucked into a teal-and-gold interior that feels more Instagram backdrop than traditional restaurant.
My parents took me here after church, knowing how much I appreciate good food — and they were right to. Every dish came out fresh and extremely flavorful, and the cocktails are genuinely worth ordering.
Here’s a fun detail that you might miss: you'll get two sets of chopsticks at the table — gold for sharing, teal for personal use. Cash only, so come prepared. ($$$)
Shanghai Kung Fu Noodles 功夫上海手工魚丸

My mom grew up eating at noodle booths exactly like this one — so when she insisted on taking us to experience what it was like for her as a kid.
Located at the corner of Zhongmei Street, this vintage wooden stand makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. The owner crafts every dish right in front of you, and there's both indoor and outdoor seating — but do yourself a favor and sit outside, where the smell of fresh noodles pulls you in, and you get a front-row seat to the whole thing. It's a local favorite for a reason, and frankly, eating here feels less like a meal and more like a memory.
The food blew us away.
The Shanghai scallion noodles come with a soft, marinated Kung Fu egg (Lu Dan 魯蛋) that's a perfect pairing, the spicy Lao Ma Chao Shou (老麻抄手) was my partner's pick and brought real heat; and the cold sesame-glazed white tofu was the refreshing reset between bites — especially on a hot day.

🦥 Bar Sloth 樹懶

Located in Xitun, Bar Sloth feels like you’re entering a forest: faux greenery, warm rattan lights, and yes, adorable sloth plushies scattered around for photo ops. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and even though we never met the owner, the bartenders that night made us feel right at home — friendly, fun, and full of solid drink recs.
The best drink? A bowl of alcohol decked out with flowers and fresh fruit — visually appealing even before you take a sip. Add the complimentary shots and easy banter with the bartenders, and it adds up to a genuinely memorable night.

Fazi Riverway 筏子溪

I had Fazi Riverway bookmarked for so long, and after coffee at CREAMY DAILY CAFE and a wander through Fengle Sculpture Park, we rented YouBikes and pedaled over with zero idea how far it was.
Google Maps struggled to find the spot, and construction blocked the stairs, but after a few failed attempts, we got the bikes up the hill. The TAICHUNG sign was under construction too, but the river was flowing peacefully, there weren’t many people around, and the effort felt worth it.
There are smooth paths at the top and bottom of the hill for biking and strolling, plus seats under a gazebo to take in the river. It’s pretty bare, but biking along the path and watching the sunset was one of my favorite memories of Taichung.
Fengle Sculpture Park 豐樂雕塑公園

If you're looking for a free afternoon in Taichung that doesn't feel like you're just killing time, Fengle is the perfect place to be.
This open-air park is home to 50+ sculptures scattered across manicured lawns, tree-lined paths, and a tranquil pond that makes the whole city feel far away. It's not on most tourist itineraries — and frankly, that's exactly why it's worth going.
Locals jog and exercise here every morning, families bring their kids to play at the playground, couples sit by the water, and nobody's in a rush to get anywhere.

Japanese-inspired indoor-outdoor night market that you won’t want to miss out on.
FISHERMAn TOWN (yep, the 'n' is lowercase) is a cool Japanese-inspired night market that you definitely don’t want to miss! It’s in the Nantun District of Taichung and has a ton of colorful food and drink stalls, shopping spots, and even a place to play games.
You could easily spend hours here just soaking it all in. The bummer is that when it first opened, it was super popular, but now it seems like people are more into regular night markets. Because of that, a lot of the booths have closed down. Fingers crossed this place sticks around because it’s such a cute idea, even if it takes a bit of effort to get there.
Maple Garden 秋紅谷景觀生態公園

Originally intended for an international expo center, this large excavation site in Taichung was repurposed as an ecological park rather than abandoned. With minimal use of concrete, this project reflects the city’s commitment to sustainability.
Maple Garden officially opened to the public in November 2012 and quickly became one of the fave spots for locals to “escape” from the city.
National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts 國立臺灣美術館

Opened in 1988, NTMoFA is Taiwan's national art museum and home to an extensive collection of modern and contemporary works. The grounds are huge — around 10 hectares — including an outdoor sculpture park worth a wander on its own. The main building runs east-west with three floors above ground and two below, so there's plenty to take in without ever feeling rushed.

Going to the movies in Taiwan hits different — and Wenxin Showtime is exactly why. This cinema inside the Wenxin mall has three experiences worth knowing about depending on your mood.
We actually found out about this place from my partner's barber — frankly, the best way to discover anything in Taiwan.
The Dolby Atmos theater is incredible for full sensory overload; you feel the movie as much as you watch it. The Tempurpedic cinema is the laidback option: reclining memory foam seats, a smaller, intimate screen, and a vibe closer to luxury lounging than a traditional movie night.
And then there's 4DX — three screens (front + both sides), 3D glasses, and an experience that genuinely makes you feel like you're inside the film. We watched Avatar 3 in this, and it was a lot (in a good way).
Either way, catching a film here is a solid evening plan, especially after a full day on your feet.

If you’re only staying in Taichung for one night, you definitely have to experience this.
HOSHINOYA sits in the Guguan mountains, where the hot springs, the bamboo, and the quiet do more for you in one night than most weeks off.
From the gardens to the private and public baths, it feels like being transported back to Japan, with food that fills you up and makes you want to stay forever.
