Three years later, and Guguan is still living in my head — the steaming hot springs, the green mountains wrapping around you, that feeling of your shoulders finally relaxing.

If Taiwan isn't the first place you picture for a hot spring escape, frankly, it should be.

Located in Taichung's Heping District, Guguan is a quiet little mountain neighborhood built for outdoor lovers and anyone craving a proper reset in nature.

And the water itself is the real draw: Guguan's springs are a high-quality carbonated hydrogen carbonate type, known for leaving your skin silky-smooth, calming your mind, and getting your blood flowing — all while you soak in some seriously beautiful scenery.

It's been a while, but this place never left me — so I'm finally giving it the post it deserves. Below: a bit of Guguan's history, the spots worth checking out, and a few tips to make your trip easier.

brief history of Guguan

Originally called Meiji Onsen during Japanese rule, the steaming waters were first discovered by local indigenous tribes. Recognizing a good thing when they saw it, the Japanese built a public bath in 1927 — no surprise there, considering their love for a good soak!

Fast forward to after World War II, when the Chinese Nationalists took control of Taiwan. They planned a key route, Provincial Highway 8, which conveniently passed right through Guguan! This turned out to be a game-changer, making Guguan a thriving and popular tourist destination.

things to do

Guguan is more than just hot springs (though those are pretty amazing, too!).
Here's how to fill your days with adventure and relaxation:

Melinda running to Guguan Suspension Bridge in Taiwan. Scenic bridge with lush surroundings.

Guguan Suspension Bridge

This iconic landmark offers stunning views and a touch of adrenaline. The bridge sways gently with each step. Just be sure to check the weight limit before crossing! While you’re walking through, snap some awesome photos from this unique point! Snap some epic photos as you capture the scenery from this unique vantage point.

Mingzhi Wenquan Old Street in Guguan, Taiwan. Traditional street with red lanterns during the day.

Old Street

After your bridge adventure, unwind with a stroll down Mingzhi Wenquan Old Street. Although it’s very small, there are red lanterns that bathe the street in a warm glow, creating a traditional atmosphere.

This is the perfect place to soak up the relaxing atmosphere.

Soak in hot springs

The most special activity to do in Guguan is to stay and soak in their wonderful hot springs.
