Have you ever been super excited about an upcoming trip, only to be hit with pre-travel stress? I can definitely relate to that.
Letโs be honestโwaiting until the last minute to get things done is not the best approach. Iโve learned this from experience. So, here's the plan: Iโm here to simplify your pre-trip preparation, step by step.
Iโve compiled a list of the most essential things you should do before you go on your next trip. These tips are filled with my own experiences Iโve from my own travels along with plenty of others, so you can trust they'll be useful.
step 1: travel documents
First things first, check those passports, visas, and any required travel permits off your list.
Passport
Is your passport about to expire? Make sure it's got at least 6 months of life left because some countries are pretty picky about that.
Now, about those passport pages โ some places want more than just a few blank ones, so check those, too.
VISA
Before flying off, find out if your destination requires a visa. Trust me, this is a must-know!
Make copies for safety
Make copies of all your crucial docs โ credit cards (front and back), passport, and ID.
Keep them hidden and safe; you never know when they might come in handy.
step 2: research + plan
Do your homework
Look up local customs and cultural norms. Knowing a bit about the culture can enhance your experience.
Learn some basic lingo
Pick up a few basic phrases in the local language. Locals will appreciate the effort!
Make a bucket list
Create a simple itinerary with must-see places, dining spots, and any activities that pique your interest.
Prioritize and plan
Select your top picks from the list and slot them into your itinerary.
Book ahead
When planning your trip, consider booking guided tours, restaurants, or activities in advance. This guarantees that you wonโt miss out, especially during holidays in other countries. You wouldnโt want to feel like youโre on vacation while others are enjoying their holidays and discover that many spots that you wanted to visit are already fully booked.
step 3: cash
Cash might seem old school, but trust me, it's your secret weapon for those low-key places.
Exchange rates
First things first, it's important to understand foreign currency and the constantly changing exchange rates. You donโt want to be confused at the counter, right?
Consider downloading an app that can help you convert your currency to the local one in the country youโre visiting.
For instance, I really like the app called My Currency Converter. It allows you to easily select the currency you need and see the exchange rate in relation to your home currency.
For example, when I was in Vietnam, I was able to check the value of the Vietnamese Dong against the US Dollar right in the app, which helped avoid any confusion.
Have some cash in hand
Now, the golden rule: always have some cash on you! Hit up your bank before you fly off. Having a bit of local currency in your pocket is like having a safety net.
And here's a pro tip: you can often score better exchange rates at your bank, especially if you're already a customer.
So, before you go all digital, remember that cash is still king in many places. With a few bills in hand, you're ready to conquer any street market, small businesses, or hidden gems your travels may reveal.

step 4: packing
Packing checklist
There are plenty of packing lists that are just a Google search away. Or, if you're feeling creative, create your custom checklist! (Psst... here's a minimal packing checklist I created for you!)
Start packing a bit early
Packing early is crucial. Last-minute chaos can lead to forgetting essential items or favorite outfits. Be sure to check the weather before you pack to ensure you bring the right essentials for the right conditions.
Keep it light
Remember, less is more. The more you pack, the heavier your suitcase. Lighten the load, and you'll thank yourself later.
Know the rules
Before you toss everything into your bag, know the rules. Different airlines, airports, and countries have their own rules and regulations. Make sure you check the rules of whatโs allowed and what isnโt allowed.
Travel-sized toiletries
When it comes to packing toiletries for your carry-on, remember that the limit is 3 ounces per bottle. Make sure you donโt get caught with oversized shampoo bottles! Also, learn from my mistake: donโt pack regular-sized toothpaste in your carry-on.
If youโre checking your bag, you can use larger sizes, but consider whether you want to waste valuable luggage space with big toiletries or go for travel-sized ones to leave room for souvenirs from your trip.
step 5: transportation
Prepping your transportation game = cruising through your trip hassle-free!
Driving
If you're planning to hit the road, check if your destination requires an international driver's license. You don't want your road trip dreams dashed at the rental counter.
If you decide to rent a car, check out Discover Cars for some sweet deals.
Train
Trains can be a fantastic way to explore. Look into local train options for a scenic journey.
Walking
Sometimes, the best way to explore is on foot. Don't forget comfy walking shoes!
step 6: stay connected
Don't let distance keep you from staying connected!
Call your phone provider
Before you fly, call your phone provider. Let them know youโre traveling and ask about international plans that cover calls, texts, and, most importantly, internet usage.
Iโve been using AT&T for years. Whenever I travel out of the country, I have full internet access when I turn off my Airplane Mode, and they charge me $12 a day for unlimited data. I also donโt have to call to let them know Iโm traveling out of the country to use my unlimited data!
๐ Wi-fi
Find Wi-Fi hotspots at your destination for easy and cost-effective internet access. Keep your phone bill in check!
SIM cards
If your provider can't keep you connected, consider buying an international SIM card at the airport or through Airalo.
step 7: banks + credit cards
Call your bank
It's crucial to inform your bank about your travel plans. If you don't, your bank might think your card's been swiped by someone else when you make those big purchases abroad. Imagine trying to explain that to customer service internationally!
Credit card
I love using my Chase Sapphire Preferred card. It feels like a VIP ticket for travelers. There are no foreign transaction fees, which allows you to avoid those frustrating credit card exchange rates. This card makes spending abroad hassle-free.
However, if you donโt have a travel credit card, it's important to contact your credit card company before traveling. Some companies may flag your card if they detect unfamiliar transactions. Also, keep in mind that, just like with your debit card, calling internationally while abroad can result in high charges.
step 8: home secured home
One thing I learned from my mom was to keep your home as TIDY as possible before you go on ANY trip.
When you return home from your trip, youโre tired AND jet lagged. Seeing a messy home doesnโt ease your stress. On the other hand, if you were to come back to a clean house, all you need to do is RELAX!
Make sure to check these off your checklist before you leave for your trip!
Upstate New York
Laundry
Do some laundry so you have clean clothes to wear and you donโt have to worry about another pile of dirty clothes when you come back from your vacation!
Pet care
Arrange for a trusted friend, sibling, family, or pet sitter to look after your fur baby.
Hold the mail
If youโre going away for months, put your mail and deliveries on hold so they don't pile up.
Give your plants some love
Give your leafy pals a good drink of water to keep them thriving. If youโre going away for a while, ask if your friends or family can water your plants while youโre gone.
Unplug and tidy up
Pull the plugs, switch off appliances, and leave your home spotless. Your future jet-lagged self will thank you!
Lock it up
Make sure all doors and windows are locked tight. Safety first!
step 9: share your travel itinerary
Don't forget this crucial step. Keep your loved ones in the loop!
Before you go on your next adventure, share your travel itinerary with a trusted friend or family member. This way, someone back home knows your plans and can reach you if needed. It's all about peace of mind for everyone involved!
Remember, your itinerary is a guide, NOT a strict schedule.
Leave room for spontaneity and enjoy every moment of your adventure!
step 10: relax and have fun!
As you wrap up your pre-trip preparations, here's a friendly reminder:
Take a moment for some self-care!
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and rush of travel plans, but don't forget to take a deep breath and relax.
Get a good night's sleep, pamper yourself a bit, and remember that your journey is about enjoying every moment.
