Kismet Beach at Fire Island
I'll never forget my first visit to Fire Island when my friend introduced me to its beautiful beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Even though we barely scratched the surface with a short exploration of the Sunken Forest, I left wanting more.
That's why I've been looking forward to returning and exploring more of what Fire Island has to offer.
Enter Kismet Beach, a stunning beach located in the town of Kismet on Fire Island. Unlike its popular neighbors, such as Cherry Grove, Kismet Beach is more low-key and family-friendly, offering a peaceful and private beach experience without the large crowds. It's an ideal getaway from New York City during the summer.
In this guide, I'll be giving you an overview of what you can do at Kismet Beach, along with some helpful tips — I got you! So grab your sunscreen and beach towel, and let's get started!
Getting There
Ride the ferry
Take the Fire Island ferry from Bay Shore. Download the FI mTickets app for free to buy water taxi and ferry tickets on your phone. Show your digital tickets when boarding for seamless access.
Water taxi
If you want to explore other parts of Fire Island, consider hopping on a water taxi. It's a great way to navigate the island's waterways without the need for walking. You can also request a water taxi using the FI mTickets app.
Private boat
For those with their own boat, docking at one of the marinas is a convenient option
Car
If driving, go to Robert Moses State Park, Parking Field #5 (there’s a parking fee). Walk to Kismet Beach or take a PediCab for $5 each way.
Things to Do
SWIM + SUNBATHE
Dive into the waters of Kismet Beach and soak up the sun on its beautiful white sands.
Be careful, though; the waves are gnarly, so make sure to stay closer to the sandy parts!
BEACH VOLLEYBALL + OTHER ACTIVITIES
Get active with a game of beach volleyball or partake in other activities like frisbee or building sandcastles with friends and family. We built a sand fort over Treasure’s (our senior Corgi) body while he was sleeping, and he loved it! 🥰
EXPLORE NEARBY SHOPS + RESTAURANTS
Walk around and discover some cute shops, unique houses, or some restaurants!
EXPLORE THE FIRE ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Located approximately 2 miles from Kismet town. Head west to reach this iconic landmark and climb the 182 curved steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding coastline.
Since there are no trash cans on the beach, be sure to bring along a trash bag to collect your waste and dispose of it responsibly when you encounter a trash bin.
