One of the spots I discovered before our trip to Barcelona was this incredible hidden gem, Brugarol, a cozy, farm-to-table restaurant tucked away in the Gothic Quarter. At the time, there were just a few hundred 5-star reviews — all praising its tasting menu and artful presentation. And they weren’t exaggerating.
I’m a visual person, so when I looked at photos that people took, each dish looked like modern art — Japanese izakaya meets Mediterranean tapas. Naturally, we had to book a table before the hype doubled to experience this spot ourselves.
about Brugarol
Brugarol isn’t your typical restaurant. It’s the city branch of a small, sustainable brand based in Palamós, where they grow their own produce, make olive oil, and even craft their wine.
The result? Every bite at Brugarol Barcelona reflects the season, the soil, and the spirit of Catalonia.
The brilliant culinary mind behind it all is Chef Angelo Scirocco, a fifth-generation chef from South Africa who trained at Michelin-starred restaurants like La Colombe and The Test Kitchen. His dishes mix Japanese precision with Mediterranean warmth — and it works.
Brugarol’s philosophy is simple: good food starts at the source.
From regenerative farming to restoring forest ecosystems in Girona, their eco-commitment runs deep.
getting there
Brugarol is hidden along a quiet street in the Gothic Quarter located near the Catedral de Barcelona and the Picasso Museum.
METRO
Take the L3 (Green Line) to Liceu, then walk 6 minutes.
TAXI
Use FreeNow or Cabify and get dropped off nearby — you’ll walk a short distance through charming, narrow lanes.
✨ TIP
If you’re exploring the Gothic Quarter, book a guided walking tour to learn about the history and visit the iconic spots!
the vibe
Brugarol feels like dining in a secret hideaway.
The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate — perfect for dates or solo slow dining.
With only five tables and soft lighting, the whole space feels like an extension of the chef’s kitchen. When we visited, one couple was celebrating their anniversary (super cute!) — proof this spot has romance written all over it.
