【台中 大坑】Dakeng Hiking Guide in Taichung, Taiwan
After visiting Taichung multiple times over the years, I finally made it to the iconic Dakeng Hiking Trails — and wow, Trail 9-1 did not disappoint. 🥾🌿
I tackled it with my parents super early in the morning (like 6 AM), and the views? Absolutely worth the climb. But before you throw on your sneakers and head up the hill, there are a few things you should know.
Dakeng isn’t just a one-trail wonder. It’s a massive scenic area with 10 official hiking routes, each with different vibes and difficulty levels.
For this post, I’m highlighting Trail 9-1 — one of the most beginner-friendly options that still delivers those sweet mountain + city views.
As I hike more of the Dakeng trails, I’ll keep this guide updated.
Dakeng overview
Just a quick drive from Taichung City, Dakeng Scenic Area is the perfect getaway when you need a nature break but don’t want to go too far.
It’s popular with locals (especially the early-rising aunties and uncles 🧓🏻👴🏻), and for good reason — the views are stunning and the trails range from intense workouts to chill strolls.

Trails 1–5
For experienced hikers (super steep — avoid if you’ve got health conditions)
Trails 6–10
More beginner-friendly and family-approved
🎯 Trail 9-1 stands out as one of the most accessible, with a scenic reward for minimal effort.
getting there
The easiest way to reach Dakeng? Drive or take an Uber — but either way, go early.
I’m talking get there by 7:00–7:30 AM kind of early. Locals love their morning hikes, and parking fills up fast.
Farmers’ market on both sides
🚗 DRIVE
There’s a free parking lot at Dongshan Motor Parking Lot (公有免費停車場), but it’s first come, first served. If you’re renting a car, make sure to have your International Driver’s Permit (IDP) ready, and you can book easily through Klook.
🚕 UBER
Plug in this location for drop-off:
📍 406, Taiwan, Taichung City, Beitun District, 東山路一段383-18號
Your driver will drop you off nearby, and from there, it’s a short uphill walk to the trail entrance.
🚲 YOUBIKE
Prefer biking? There’s a YouBike 2.0 docking station nearby:
📍 YouBike2.0 東山腳踏停車場站 (Dongshanjiaotatingchechang Station)
Whichever route you choose, get your steps (or pedals) in early — the cool morning air and peaceful trail are 100% worth the effort.
Dakeng Trail No. 9-1
Morning fog with mountain and city views
Don’t be fooled by the “beginner” tag — Trail 9-1 starts off chill but gets surprisingly steep as you continue to go up. It’s a great intro trail if you want a workout without feeling like you're dying all the way up. 😅
What to expect
⏱️ Takes about 30 minutes to reach the top
🌤️ Mostly shaded trail with cool breeze
👩🏻🌾 Weekend farmers’ markets
🥐 Local breakfast stalls open around 8 AM
We started our hike at 7 AM. Although the local vendors weren’t open yet, we reached the top and then hiked back down halfway to relax while enjoying an authentic Taiwanese breakfast from a local spot.
Afterward, we walked back down, and my parents bought some fresh fruit at the farmers’ market! I highly recommend this experience, especially on the weekends!
Dakeng Earthquake Park
Right near the end of the 9-1 trail is a quiet spot known as Dakeng Earthquake Park, which was the site of two schools destroyed in the 1999 earthquake.
The park has a large open space, but not much else to see. It’s somewhat “hidden,” located near the end past the farmer’s markets, and you have to walk up some steps to reach it.
There isn’t much signage, but it’s a peaceful place to rest, reflect, or take drone shots — something we enjoyed doing.

Surprisingly, it isn’t listed on Google Maps! If you’re interested in Taiwan’s history, it’s definitely worth a visit.
