This guide covers everything from ticket options and what's inside to nearby dining spots and tips for making the most of your visit. By the end, you'll know exactly what to expect — and how to book your tickets before you even land in Taiwan. 🗼
about Taipei 101
On December 31, 2004, Taipei 101 was unveiled to the public with a grand New Year's celebration, featuring a stunning fireworks display.
It was the world’s tallest building until the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed it and became the tallest in 2010.
Taipei 101 is not just tall; it also has amazing technology inside. It features the world's fastest elevator, which transports people from the 5th to the 89th floor in just 37 seconds. Imagine how exciting it is to go up so fast! You don’t even feel the speed!
In 2011, Taipei 101 received a Platinum Certificate for its energy-efficient operations and environmental friendliness.
This made this admirable landmark a top-notch building and the world's largest and tallest green building.
The brilliant architects C.Y. Lee and C.P. Wang, combined traditional Asian style with modern design in Taipei 101. Their creation not only looks beautiful but also includes features to make sure it stays strong and sturdy during earthquakes and tropical storms like typhoons.

Taipei 101 tickets
Deciding on how to experience the iconic views of Taipei 101 is a super exciting decision. There are multiple ways you can purchase your tickets. Here are the four different options:
89th Floor Observatory
89th + 101st Floor Observatory
101 Skyline 460 Observatory
Taipei 101 Express Pass (which allows you to get in the elevator faster without waiting in line with others)
The basic ticket gives you access to the 89th floor, offering great views of Taipei's skyline. But for the best experience, you'll need to purchase a different ticket for the 101st-floor observation deck.
Just remember, the first elevator ride takes you to the 89th floor, and then you'll need to take another elevator, located through the gift shop, to reach the 101st floor!
For a seamless experience, we bought our tickets through Klook and got the 89F + 101F Observatory Ticket. One great thing about buying online is being able to show our tickets on our phones and have them printed at the counter, which skips the line for purchasing tickets.
highlights you can't miss
🏙️ Visit the observation decks
The observation deck experience is the whole reason most people come — and it doesn't disappoint. The 89th floor gives you a full 360-degree panoramic view of Taipei's skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows.
But if you buy the combo ticket, head to the 101st floor first — it's less crowded, has an outdoor viewing area (which I always forget to visit), and gives you fresh air with that jaw-dropping view. Trust me, do 101st first, then work your way down to 89th!
🟡 Find the giant damper ball
On your way between floors, you'll pass by Taipei 101's famous 660-tonne tuned mass damper — basically a giant golden pendulum ball that keeps the building stable during earthquakes and typhoons.
It's oddly mesmerizing and makes for a great photo op!
🎰 Play the gacha machines
Downstairs on the shopping floors, where the other gift shops are located, there are gacha machines with all kinds of collectibles — Taipei 101-themed, Taiwan-exclusive, and random kawaii surprises. You can exchange your hundreds for a few coins because it's dangerously addictive. 😄
🪙 Try the coin carving machine
One of the most underrated souvenirs in Taipei 101 — stick in a coin and get a custom-engraved coin to take home. Super affordable and a cute little keepsake!
📸 Take photos in the photobooth
There’s a photobooth inside on the 89th floor — perfect for a silly or aesthetic travel memory with your travel buddy.
🛍️ Explore the shopping floors
Floors B1 to 6 are packed with everything from luxury brands to local Taiwanese shops, food courts, Din Tai Fung, and cafés. Even if you're not buying, it's worth wandering through — especially the basement for the fooooood.
🍽️ Dine at Sky Dining
If you want to treat yourself, Sky Dining on the 85th and 86th floors offers a one-of-a-kind meal with sweeping city views. It's pricier, but the atmosphere is unmatched for a special occasion.

final thoughts
Visiting Taipei 101 in 2023!
My recommendation is to go early!
There’s already a huge crowd of people waiting outside before Taipei 101 was even open.
Make sure you get your tickets online before you visit for a seamless experience!
We were there for about 2 hours exploring the 101st floor first and then went to the 89th floor.
My advice is to visit and take pictures on the 89th floor first. Then head to the 101st floor because not everyone buys the 101st floor tickets. We missed out on some really good photo opportunities because there were so many people on the 89th floor!
I hope you have fun!
