【台北 士林夜市】Shilin Night Market in Taipei

Crowds exploring street food stalls at Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan, the city’s largest and busiest night market

Taipei comes alive at night — and there’s no better place to experience it than Shilin Night Market, the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan.

Night markets are a huge part of Taiwan’s culture, and Shilin is where many travelers experience their first real Taiwanese street food adventure. It’s also home to several Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls, where family recipes have been passed down for generations.

I actually visited Shilin years ago when I was in college, and it always stuck in my memory as one of those places I had to revisit someday. Returning as an adult felt completely different. The lively energy, the smell of street food everywhere, and the mix of locals and travelers from all over the world make it feel like one big cultural celebration centered around Taiwanese food.

Even after my annual trips back to Taiwan and exploring night markets across the island, Shilin is still one of the most fun (and chaotic) places to eat your way through Taipei.

If you’re wondering what to eat, how to get there, and whether Shilin Night Market is actually worth visiting, this guide has you covered.

Let’s dive in.

about Shilin Night Market

Busy walkway packed with visitors and street food vendors at Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan

Located in Taipei’s Shilin District, Shilin Night Market is the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan, dating back to 1909.

Today, the market features over 500 food stalls, along with local shops, vintage arcade games, and yummy dessert vendors.

The market originally started as a small group of food vendors gathering near a local temple. Over the decades, it evolved into the massive night market we see today — filled with family-run stalls serving recipes that have been passed down for generations.

You’ll find iconic Taiwanese street foods like stinky tofu, pepper buns, scallion pancakes, oyster omelets, and so much more. Some vendors have even received Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition, highlighting the incredible quality of Taiwanese street food!

While Shilin is popular with tourists, locals still come here for late-night snacks. The atmosphere is loud, energetic, and packed with people — but not quite as tightly packed as Raohe Street Night Market.

And honestly? That chaotic, lively energy is exactly what makes a Taiwanese night market feel so special.

getting there

🚇 MRT (Best Option)

The easiest way to reach the night market is by riding the Taipei MRT. Use your EasyCard and take the Red Line to Jiantan Station. From the station, it’s only about a 2–3 minute walk to the main entrance of the night market.

🚌 Bus

Several Taipei buses also stop near the night market, including Shilin Market and Yangming Theater.

Another option to consider is the Taipei Fun Pass, which bundles unlimited MRT rides, bus rides, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, and admission to popular attractions into one card.

🚕 Taxi / Rideshare

Taxis in Taipei are affordable and convenient, especially if you’re traveling late at night or with a group. If you’re staying at a hotel, you can ask your hotel front desk to call you a yellow taxi, or you can hail one yourself outside that’s empty. You can also request a ride from Uber, as well as request a taxi from Uber!

highlights you can't miss

With over 500 food vendors, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
Here are some of the must-try foods and experiences at Shilin Night Market.

Miaokou small Taiwanese sausages (廟口小香腸)

Miaokou is a market district in Keelung, Taiwan. Grab a skewer of grilled Taiwanese mini sausages — they’re smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor.

Chengzu pepper buns (丞祖胡椒餅)

One of the most iconic foods at Taiwanese night markets. These buns are baked in a clay oven, giving them a crispy sesame-coated exterior with juicy pork filling inside.

Stinky tofu (臭豆腐)

You really can’t visit a night market without trying Taiwan’s most infamous street food. Yes, it smells intense — but when it’s deep-fried and served with pickled cabbage, it’s actually incredibly delicious. And yes — they’re vegan!

Whirlwind Potato Tower (旋風薯塔)

Funny story, I actually first tried this at a Taiwanese-inspired night market in Queens, NY, and loved it. So when I spotted it at Shilin Night Market, I had to get it again.

A potato tower is a spiral-cut potato that’s deep-fried and served on a stick. Vendors add toppings like salt & pepper, seaweed seasoning, spicy powder, and more.

Super crispy and addictive.

Winning a black cat plush keychain from claw machines at Shilin Night Market arcade games in Taipei

Claw machines

Taiwan takes its claw machines very seriously.

Test your luck and see if you can win plushies — we actually ended up winning the most prizes we’ve ever gotten from claw machines in one night here. But then again, my partner decided to be impulsive and spend $1000 TWD on claw games, so, lol. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Play games!

Try some carnival-style games scattered throughout the market. Even if you don’t win anything, it’s part of the fun.

Check out quirky shops

One of the fun parts of Shilin is wandering around and discovering random shops selling everything from souvenirs to trendy accessories and fashion.

final thoughts

Street food vendors and snack stalls inside Shilin Night Market in Taipei, Taiwan

Yes — Shilin Night Market is absolutely worth visiting.

While some travelers say it’s too touristy, it’s still one of the best places in Taipei to try Taiwanese street food all in one place. Personally, I’d recommend visiting Shilin first for the lively atmosphere, and then checking out Raohe Night Market another night for a slightly different vibe.

My biggest tip?

Arrive hungry and share food with friends so you can try more dishes.

Night markets are about wandering, trying random snacks, playing games, hanging out with friends, and soaking in the electric nighttime energy that makes Taipei so special.
