【台中 春水堂】Chun Shui Tang in Taichung
Walking around Taichung, I kept noticing a teahouse called Chun Shui Tang (春水堂) popping up everywhere. At first, I just thought it was another cute Taiwanese tea spot — until I realized the location near our apartment was actually the original flagship store… aka the birthplace of bubble tea.
Yep. The global boba obsession? It started right here.
Fun fact: Chun Shui Tang also created TP Tea, which some of you might recognize internationally (I used to grab boba there all the time in the Bay). Naturally, I had to see if the OG spot lived up to the hype.
about Chun Shui Tang
Chun Shui Tang is one of Taichung's most famous chain teahouses, established in 1983.
Initially, they sold cold tea, but it was their creation of boba milk tea (or bubble milk tea) that ignited a tea culture revolution and became a popular trend.
The concept of drinking cold tea, inspired by Western-style bar counters, dates way back to the Song Dynasty. In 1985, this tradition became well established in Taiwanese culture, and Chun Shui Tang began using various tea ingredients to create more exciting drinks and snacks.
Boba milk tea, made with green, black, or Oolong tea, milk, and an option of black boba as a topping (also known as tapioca or bubbles), became their greatest creation, and it all started at this restaurant.
For those who are unfamiliar, boba milk tea (or bubble tea) has become a signature drink of Taiwan and all across the world, representing its unique characteristics.
Therefore, for all the boba lovers, Chun Shui Tang is boba's birthplace! Boba life!🧋

I had an amazing dining experience with my parents.
Despite being attacked by annoying mosquitoes four times, having lunch with my parents was totally worth it.
Of course, I had to try the original delicious boba milk tea — smooth tea flavor, chewy boba!
It made me appreciate how boba was originally meant to taste: simple, tea-forward, and not just a sugar bomb.
