If you're planning a trip to New York City, Brooklyn needs to be on your itinerary — not just a maybe-if-we-have-time stop. Each of NYC's boroughs has its own personality, and Brooklyn genuinely feels like its own world: the trendy streets of Williamsburg, the artsy grit of Bushwick, the historic brownstones of Crown Heights. I've spent enough time wandering different neighborhoods to know they sometimes don't even feel like the same borough.
In this guide, I'm walking you through the best dining spots, must-see attractions, and the travel tips I actually use to get around Brooklyn like a local.
Brief History
Brooklyn is the second-largest borough of New York City, right after Queens, and was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans.
Dutch settlers established the area in 1634, naming it "Breuckelen" after a town in the Netherlands.
In the 19th century, Brooklyn remained an independent city until it joined New York City in 1898.
Today, Brooklyn is recognized for its rich cultural diversity, eclectic neighborhoods, and thriving arts and food scenes, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and travelers alike.

English is the main language you’ll hear, but you’ll also catch a bunch of other languages like Spanish, Chinese, Yiddish, French Creole, Russian, Hebrew, Italian, Turkish, Urdu, and so many more. Basically, Brooklyn is a melting pot of cultures!

💡 TIPPING
It's customary to leave a tip of 15 - 20% at the end of each bill, depending on the level of service you received during the day.
In the evenings, the percentage usually goes up to 20 - 30%.
🚨 SAFETY
Brooklyn is generally safe, but it’s essential to remain aware of your surroundings, just as you would when traveling abroad. If you’re walking alone, avoid loud headphones and stay alert.
For women, consider walking with others, especially late at night. Trust your instincts and stick to well-lit areas.
Always pay attention to the traffic, and if you’re new to the area, don’t hesitate to ask locals for directions.

Best Time to Visit
Brooklyn has all four seasons.
Fall
Fall — my favorite season — is beautiful with bright, burning colored leaves on the trees, and I’d say it also has the best weather to walk around and enjoy the city.
Winter
Winters can be extremely cold and brisk, and sometimes you may see snow.
While heavy snowfall hasn’t been very common over the last 20 years, we actually experienced a couple of significant snowfalls last year (from December 2024 to February 2025), along with extremely cold weather!
Spring
Spring brings cool temperatures and the beauty of blooming flowers. I believe this is one of the best times to see beautiful flowers in bloom, typically from mid-March to the end of May.
If you’re interested in seeing the cherry blossoms, be sure to visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in May!
This year, the cherry blossoms bloomed a bit late (around the end of May), and they tend to wither quickly, so plan your visit accordingly!
Summer
Summers can be very hot and humid, but thankfully, some areas of the neighborhood are surrounded by water, which occasionally brings refreshing breezes.
If you're prone to getting bitten by mosquitoes (like me!), be sure to wear sunscreen and mosquito repellent when you go outside.
Also, rain is pretty common throughout the summer. NYC has become increasingly tropical-like during this season.
