If you’re planning a night out in Saigon, the Saigon Opera House located in District 1 near Đồng Khởi is one of the most elegant things you can do with an evening. My partner and I saw the A O Show here, and I still think about how flawless and expressive it was.
From the French colonial facade to the performance itself, it’s a night for travelers who want to go a little deeper into Vietnam’s history. This guide covers the history, how to get tickets, where to sit, and what to wear.
Get there early for drinks on the patio.
Brief History
The Saigon Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, is one of the city’s most iconic remnants of French colonial rule.
Construction began in 1898, and the theatre opened on January 1, 1900. French architect Félix Olivier designed it in the “flamboyant” style popular during France’s Third Republic. Here, flamboyant doesn’t just mean dramatic. It means elaborately decorative, rich with curves, carvings, and flair. Think of it as France’s theatrical response to the tropics.
Olivier modeled the facade on Paris’s Petit Palais, and the decorations and furnishings were designed by French artists and shipped over from France.
Inside, you’ll find granite floors, crystal chandeliers, and an auditorium of about 500 velvet-lined seats. Even from the second floor, the sound was incredible.
When it opened in 1900, the theatre could hold up to 1,800 people. Today it seats about 500.
But it hasn’t always been about the arts.
From 1955 until 1975, the building housed South Vietnam’s legislature. In 1975 it was briefly used by the People’s Congress of Deputies of the Republic of South Vietnam, and it wasn’t until 1976 that it returned to its original purpose as a theater.
The facade was restored in 1998, for Saigon’s 300th anniversary, reviving its former glory for a new generation.
Getting There
There are several different ways to get there; here are some options:
WALK
If you’re staying nearby like we were, walk. It’s flat.
Pre-download your map in case you lose signal.
GRAB
Vietnam’s Uber. Reliable and cheap, and the easiest option from farther away.
METRO
Line 1 stops at Opera House Station, one stop from Ben Thanh. Use Gate 5, across from the park in front of the theater.
It opened after our trip, so I haven’t ridden it.
BUS
Several stops are a few minutes’ walk away, including Park Hyatt Saigon and Vincom Đồng Khởi.
Ticket + Schedule
Okay, serious talk now. You have three ways to buy tickets for the Saigon Opera House, and only one of them is low-stress.
The box office is a bit more old-school and a bit risky, since tickets can sell out and you might not get the seat you want. The official website has more show options, but no perks, no refunds, and surprisingly higher prices. Booking platforms like Klook and GetYourGuide are our go-to for tickets, tours, and more.
| Where | Price | Perks | Cancellation | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KlookOur pick | $ | Cheapest, quick booking | Up to 7 days prior | Book on Klook |
| GetYourGuide | $$ | Reserve now, pay later | Up to 24 hrs before | Book on GetYourGuide |
| Official site | $$$ | More show options | No refunds | Official site |
Prices and refund terms change. Check the listing before you book.
Showtimes vary by season, but most performances are in the evening. The A O Show usually starts around 6 PM and runs about an hour with no interval, and we loved it. You’ll also find classical music concerts, ballet, and traditional performances.
To see what’s playing, go to the official schedule, choose “Shows & Tickets,” and select “Ho Chi Minh City.”
Final Thoughts
Watching the A O Show at the Saigon Opera House was such a perfect date night. It was funny, poetic, and frankly kind of mind-blowing. I’m still thinking about how seamlessly it blended Vietnamese tradition, physical theater, and humor.
We got there a bit early and were welcomed with complimentary drinks, which was a sweet touch. We hung out on the patio soaking in the breeze before heading inside, and after a long, sweaty day exploring Saigon, it was the reset we didn’t know we needed.
We sat in the “Wow” section on the second floor, and even from up there the view and sound were incredible. If you wear glasses, bring them so you catch every detail. The only downside was a few phones going off during the performance, but that’s on the audience, not the show.
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely.
It’s romantic, cultural, and nothing like your usual night out.
