Our balcony at The Secret looked out over mountains and sea, and then the rain rolled in, and we spent the evening listening to it instead. We slept so well that night.
That’s The Secret in Con Dao: a quiet oceanfront hotel built around a 100-year-old restored villa, with French-colonial touches, Vietnamese design, a plastic-free commitment, and a pool that glows under a dome at night.
Our stay was too short, and I’d happily extend it.
About The Secret
The Secret is oceanfront, with panoramic sea views and a restored 100-year-old villa on the grounds. The design mixes French-colonial influences with contemporary Vietnamese style, and the sustainability is real: reverse osmosis water filtration, biodegradable amenities, and a plastic-free commitment.
This stay is perfect for couples, families, and solo travelers who want a quiet stay with a
Getting There
The Secret airport shuttle
Here’s some good news: The Secret has a complimentary airport shuttle (about a 10- 15-minute drive). Bad news if you forget: you have to reserve it before you land at Con Dao Airport. We booked it for the ride back too.
If you didn’t reserve it as we did, there are two taxi companies that operate right outside the airport for a quick ride.
For flights and ferries to the island, see my Con Dao Island Guide.
checking in
The lobby felt extremely welcoming and refined, with a touch of tropical vibes.
Check-in was pretty straightforward: passport, ID, and a credit card. Our room wasn’t ready yet, so the staff held our luggage and even arranged a moped rental. They also handed us a welcome drink, which was super sour, so be ready.
Room Overview
We stayed in the Zen Suite Ocean View Room — which we got with a free upgrade, thanks to booking with a Capital One Venture X card!
Two balconies
There was a small one by the bed and a large one that wraps around the study area.
It rained pretty hard the rest of the day, so we couldn’t spend much time outside, but the mountain and sea views were incredible to watch from afar.
I just wish we’d had time for some outdoor yoga.
King bed
Plenty of room to roll around, with plush pillows. The rain pattering on the balcony helped us sleep so well.
Work desk, tea station, eco-friendly toiletries
A round wooden desk perfect for people who work remotely and for longer stays, a tea and coffee station with a mini-fridge, and eco-friendly toiletries with refillable hand soap and towels you can ask to reuse.
Turndown service
A super thoughtful touch with chocolates!
Dining
Tropical Café
Fresh pastries, sandwiches, and homemade kombucha.
While we waited for our room, we grabbed pastries, a sandwich, iced coffee, and iced tea before heading to the beach.
The next morning, we skipped the hotel breakfast for An Ơi Cafe —which I’d do again in a heartbeat.
Spice Kitchen
The hotel’s signature restaurant serves Asian fusion dishes and Western favorites like pizza and burgers. You can dine inside or outside with poolside views.
amenities
The Secret Con Dao offers way more than just a place to sleep!
Pool
Swim, tan, and admire the ocean.
Moped rental
The best way to explore Con Dao. Rent one right outside the hotel or at a local stand.
If you’re renting through your hotel, you’ll need your passport, driver’s license, and cash.

What's Nearby
Is It Worth It?
Our stay was, like many others we’ve experienced, too short! If we had all the time in the world, we’d extend our visit in a heartbeat and use everything: the pool, the classes, the lessons.
So, what are you waiting for? If you want a stylish beach escape with modern touches and eco-friendly values, The Secret in Con Dao is the perfect choice!
And the downside? Frankly, there isn’t one. The worst things that happened to us were a super sour welcome drink and a rainy balcony. It’s reasonably priced too.
